North Sea holidays with a dog is one of the three most important domestic travel topics in Germany. The North Sea is the perfect destination for dog holidays – for families, couples, and friends, often booked from late April to mid-October. Dog beaches of sand or grass, rough waves, a fascinating coastal landscape, and traditional seaside resorts – from Emden to Wilhelmshaven, Cuxhaven, and Sylt characterize the North Sea holiday region. Thanks to the Wadden Sea and the dog beaches, the North Sea is one of Germany's most popular holiday destinations for vacations with dogs. The dog beach, where four-legged friends can sniff, dig, and splash with like-minded companions, is great for both small and large dogs.

Many North Sea resorts have reserved beach sections for four-legged friends for beach holidays with dogs. In terms of beach quality, accessibility, leash requirements, and other amenities for pets, the North Sea dog beaches vary considerably. Before booking a North Sea holiday with a dog, it is worth taking a closer look at what the dog beach at your holiday destination offers. Not all dog beaches are the same. On the North Sea, there are beaches with leash requirements as well as beaches where dogs can romp in the sand and water without a leash. Honestly, who wants to play in the water with their Labrador on a leash, no matter how promising the holiday resort may be?

We traveled to the North Sea dog beaches for our readers and tested them. In our review of the North Sea dog beaches, we reveal where a North Sea dog holiday is worthwhile and where it is most beautiful. We also tell you which North Sea dog beaches you should better avoid.

Test Report: Dog Beaches on the North Sea

Dog Beaches on Sylt

Sylt, with an area of 99.14 km², is located on the west coast of Schleswig-Holstein and is the largest of the North Frisian islands. The island is a popular holiday destination, and the spa towns of Westerland, Kampen, and Wenningstedt are the tourist centers. Sylt offers around 40 kilometers of sandy beach and over 12,000 beach chairs. The main travel season is from June to September. Even in midsummer, the island does not get as hot as the mainland. Ideal for dog holidays in summer.

Sylt offers wellness and numerous culinary highlights, including several Michelin-starred restaurants. Sylt is known not only for its excellent cuisine and good hotels, but also for its unique nature. Leisure activities such as the Sylt Aquarium, the "Naturgewalten" experience center, and the Tinnum animal park complete the offer for families. Sylt offers ideal conditions for a holiday with a dog. Long walks through the landscape and the unique climate guarantee a holiday for owners and their four-legged friends.

In general, a dog holiday on Sylt is recommended during the pre- and post-season as the ideal travel time, as these months offer the most freedom. In the off-season from November 1st to March 14th, all beaches on Sylt are freely accessible for walks with dogs.

Sylt is not only the ideal destination for two-legged but also for four-legged friends. Wide beaches and many hiking trails offer plenty of space for ample exercise. Sylt proves to be a dog-friendly island. Dogs are not only allowed on 17 beaches but can also run around freely to their heart's content. Here, four-legged friends can romp on the beach, play in the sand as they please, fetch sticks from the waves, and sniff each other. In this review, we show where owners and dogs can enjoy the sea together.

Dog Beach List (Sylt)

The municipality of List offers dog owners two designated dog beaches:

• in the southern areas at beach access 17 (textile beach)
• at beach access 19, which is also a nudist beach.

The West Beach near List is surrounded by a wild dune landscape. The North Sea offers opportunities for swimming regardless of ebb and flow. Strong surf waves are to be expected at the West Beach, which big dogs enjoy in the sea. In List, leashes are compulsory, with the exception of the beach area at the dog beach. Dog waste bags are available free of charge at the List auf Sylt tourist office, as well as from the beach chair attendants during the bathing season from 15.05. to 30.09.

To reach the dog section of the beach, dog owners with their dogs are allowed to walk along the tideline. Parking is subject to a fee, only a few meters away until you reach the pier to the beach. In the immediate vicinity are restrooms and a snack bar.

Dog Beach Kampen (Sylt)

The district of Kampen has two dog beaches: both in the north and south of Kampen. During peak season, four-legged friends must be kept on a leash at both locations. Section N also offers free "poop bags."
It's also good for sweet tooths to know that there's a mobile dog ice cream parlor at Kampen's main beach (at the Rotes Kliff). Your four-legged friend can enjoy beef & carrot and wild salmon for only €3.00 per 90 ml cup.
But it's not just man's best friend who gets his money's worth. The 30-meter-high cliff at the Rotes Kliff is particularly impressive. At sunset, the blood-red fireball and panoramic views of the North Sea are stunning.

Dog Beach Wenningstedt-Braderup (Sylt)

Walks with sand under their paws, a little cool-down in the North Sea, and romping with other dogs on the beach – that's the dog holiday Wenningstedt makes possible. During the season (from March 15th to October 31st), dogs are allowed to walk along the tideline across the beach, but not to sit down. Access to the beach with a dog during this time is exclusively at the designated dog beaches and at the Risgap access (however, only direct crossing of the beach to the tideline is permitted here). In the off-season, i.e., from November 1st to March 14th, all beaches and beach accesses are usable. Leash requirements generally apply on the beach.

Wenningstedt offers two dog beaches for four-legged family members:

• In the north, the dog beach at the access to the campsite is a nudist beach.
• In the south, the dog beach at the Seestraße access is a textile beach.

Good to know:

• Sometimes there are long walks over wooden stairs, about 25 minutes. It's better to park at the campsite, from there it's an 8-minute walk.
• Access via the steep stairs is not feasible for every older dog.
• The beach restaurant is worth a visit!

Dog Beach Westerland (Sylt)

Dog Beach Nordseeklinik

In the north, there is the Nordseeklinik beach access (4.11). The beach access can be reached via a wooden staircase up to the sandy path. Sufficient parking spaces are available at the Nordseeklinik. In the immediate vicinity of the beach, since 2020, there has been the Marinara Beachclub, for Neapolitan pizza in the evening with wine. Remember to bring provisions for yourself and your four-legged friend, as the nearest beach bar is a few hundred meters away. You should avoid parking in no-parking zones – these are strictly controlled, and tickets are generously distributed.

Dog Beach Dikjen Deel

In the south, there is also the Dikjen Deel beach (4.90). This beach is particularly known as the "youth beach." A youth hostel and a snack bar are in the immediate vicinity. Access from the youth hostel is possible via a sandy path without stairs. The nearest public access points are at the paid Zauberbude parking lot with a kiosk/snack bar and public toilet. Paid parking is available at the Zauberbude parking lot. Here, visitors can not only bring their four-legged friends but also go nude bathing and rent beach chairs.

Dog Beach Baakdeel

Also in the south is the Baakdeel beach section (5.11.1 & 5.12.1). In the Baakdeel 5.11.1 nature reserve, there are both parking spaces and a kiosk with snacks and drinks. Access to the dog beach section 5.11 is via a longer dune path through the nature reserve, not ideal for older dogs or owners. The next beach access to beach section 5.12 is directly at the campsite at the "Campingplatz Rantum" bus stop, served by line 2. Infrastructure facilities are available at this beach section. The beach sauna with terrace and beach chairs is idyllic (not open all year round). Showers and a public toilet are located directly on the access path. The local surf school "Ride on" offers surf courses. At beach section 5.12.1, there is a campsite. Visitors can also relax at the beach sauna with terrace. Beach chairs are also provided. Public toilets and showers for dogs are also available on site.

Dog Beach Rantum (Sylt)

The district of Rantum offers 5 designated dog beaches across an area of 9.39 km².

To the southern dog beach 5.51 and the dune restaurant of the same name, a beautiful path leads through the dunes. The southern dog beach (South 9) Tadjem Deel offers guests a fish restaurant with the same name Tadjem Deel and plenty of beach chairs. Parking and toilets are also available. The beach is also a nudist beach. At beach section 5.52 there are lifeguard stations, beach chairs and showers, and below the restaurant at the edge of Rantum, there is a parking lot directly. Well-maintained, quiet dog beach with clean sanitary facilities and a restaurant/kiosk in the dunes. Even in high season, it is not overcrowded; beach chairs are only in two rows with plenty of space in between.

Dog Beaches on Föhr Island

The 82.82 km² island of Föhr is also part of the North Frisian island group in Schleswig-Holstein. The dog-friendly island offers several dog beaches for man's best friend. Generally, there is a leash requirement in Föhr, but there are exceptions. Dispensers with dog waste bags are located around Föhr, so that the island remains beautiful and clean, everyone should and must dispose of waste during their stay.

Dog Beach Utersum on Föhr

Utersum offers furry friends a beautiful, natural sandy beach, where unfortunately they are only allowed to romp, run, play (and so on) on a leash. The fine sandy beach is interspersed with large stones. This beach has been left to nature and is a real insider tip, if you are willing to overlook the leash requirement. It is rumored that the leash requirement is only strictly controlled in the high season when the weather is good. At other times, the handling is less strict. The beach offers a lot of open space and wonderful tranquility. Beach chairs can be rented. The water slopes gently, simply a dog paradise. It is best to plan your beach visit at low tide, then the beach is so wide that dogs can really run and not disturb any visitors.

Overall, the beach is clean for a natural beach. Owners can find parking right near Utersum. There is also a playground for the little ones on site. Only a kiosk was missing where holidaymakers could get something to eat or drink. Unfortunately, there are also no rubbish bins, benches, and occasionally a toilet house. One more negative point should be mentioned: the dog beach is shared with kiters. Dog owners must be careful not to get tangled in the ropes of kites lying on the ground or to get hit on the head by them. Dogs get scared when kites crash next to them at high speed. We think: either kiter or dog beach, both are not compatible.

Dog beaches in Nieblum on Föhr

Nieblum is an island village in Föhr and, due to its idyllic setting, is a picturesque paradise for tourists seeking relaxation. The 6 km long beach is fine-sandy and constantly supervised. Nieblum is home to two dog beaches: at the so-called Drachenstrand (border with Gotingen) and near Strandstraße. The Drachenstrand, as the name suggests, is also known for kite flying. Public toilets are also available. At Strandstraße there is even a playground where children can romp around.

Dog Beach at Drachenstrand

The dog beach at Drachenstrand near Gotingen is a beautiful dog beach with infrastructure: a snack bar, toilet, and a small shop are available. The beach section can be reached via several access points. The snack bar with good fish sandwiches is next to the parking lot - it's worth trying the crab roll here! The dog beach is clean and well-maintained, yet not too crowded. Relaxed coexistence of humans and dogs. The gently sloping water leads softly into the sea, ideal for small dogs. It's ideal for swimming, as the water isn't deep at first and dogs can play - which not only brings joy to the dogs but also to their owners. The beach section is supervised by the DLRG in high season, beach chair rental including toilet and children's playground are not far away! The parking lot is above the dunes, and there is also a good café with a mini-golf course here!

The Nieblum dog beach is an equally great dog beach with infrastructure: snack bar and toilet. The dog beach is fine-sandy, clean and well-maintained, yet not heavily frequented. Access to the dog beach is via Strandstrasse, where car and bicycle parking are available. The gently sloping water leads softly into the sea, ideal for small dogs to play and swim. You walk far into the sea before you can swim. The beach section is supervised by the DLRG in high season, beach chair rental including toilet and children's playground are not far away!

Dog Beaches in Wyk on Föhr

The three dog beaches available in the island capital of Wyk are large enough for four-legged guests to romp around, if it weren't for the leash requirement. Unlike other dog beaches on Föhr, dogs in Wyk must be kept on a leash. In addition to the three designated dog beaches, owners can find a dog run for their four-legged friends on Wyker Sandstraße. Here, dogs are allowed to move freely and romp around magnificently. Only here, though.

One dog beach is located directly near the airfield (beach section 30).

At beach section 12 there is another dog beach, directly nearby is the Aquaföhrs car park. Section 12 is a very well-maintained beach section. Unlike in many holiday regions on the North Sea, where dog beaches are banished to some distant corner as a nuisance, dog beach section 12 is embedded in the middle of Föhr's beach landscape. You will meet many dogs of various breeds here, who can play together in the sand and water. If you want to holiday on Föhr with a dog, you should reserve a beach chair here in good time.

Near the ferry port (beach section 1) there is also a dog beach. Right from the ferry, the 1st beach section is intended for furry friends! Diesel fumes from ferry operations included. The nearest parking option (parking lot at Heymannsweg 1) is immediately nearby. The section is a nice beach with beach chairs and a restaurant and shopping facilities nearby. The walk to the parking lot is only a few minutes.

Dog Beaches on Amrum

The North Frisian island of Amrum has an area of 20.46 km² and is located in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park. On Amrum, in addition to the 2300 inhabitants, it is also populated by tens of thousands of sea and shore birds, which is why dogs must always be kept on a leash. Amrum offers three dog beaches and sufficient dog waste bag dispensers in the respective locations.

Dog Beach Nebel on Amrum

The dog beach in Nebel is a spacious beach with fine sand. The dog beach is also clean and well-maintained. Events are occasionally held on some evenings. Beach chair rentals are also available on site.

Pellworm Dog Beach

Pellworm, "the harbor for the soul," is a 6 km long and 7 km wide island in the North Sea. It is the third-largest North Frisian island after Sylt and Föhr. The island is home to many sheep and cows and is particularly suitable for a quiet vacation. The island consists mostly of grassland, so there are no sandy beaches. The North Sea island offers three designated dog beaches. At all three designated dog beaches, there is no leash requirement, so furry friends can romp around extensively. Dogs only need to be leashed on the dike and the foreland. Pellworm provides free dog waste bags to keep the island clean.

Dog beach at Hooger Fähre

The dog beach at Hooger Fähre is well-equipped with infrastructure: there are 3 restaurants and public toilets. Parking is 200 meters away. Dog waste bag dispensers are located at the beach entrance. The dog beach at Hooger Fähre is separated from the other beach. The beach is a so-called green beach, it consists of grass! The dog beach offers good swimming and sunbathing opportunities, but it should be noted that the water here is really deep! Not optimal for every dog. Due to the leash requirement in other areas and the deep water, the dog beach at Hooger Fähre is only conditionally recommended. Unrestrained frolicking is not possible here. It is a suitable place for a nice walk along the water or to relax a bit.

Dog Beach Schütting

This green beach is on the west coast of the North Sea island of Pellworm. The beach chairs are directly on the dike. Bathing steps lead into the water, and each bathing step is equipped with a beach shower. The water depth is ideal for swimmers, although the beach is unguarded. For small dogs, the beach is unsuitable for swimming. A café is nearby, and a restaurant is at the Old Church. Good parking is available. Right near the Schütting Dog Beach is the Wadden Sea Museum, as well as a restaurant and restrooms. A restroom is in a separate building at the beach access. The paved path over the dike provides barrier-free access.

A café is nearby and a restaurant at the Old Church. Good parking is available. Right near the Schütting Dog Beach is the Wadden Sea Museum, as well as a restaurant and restrooms. A restroom is in a separate building at the beach access. The paved path over the dike provides barrier-free access.

Next to the lighthouse, there are plenty of dining options and public restrooms here.

Nordstrand Peninsula Dog Beach

Nordstrand is a municipality on the diked North Sea peninsula of Nordstrand. Nordstrand calls itself: "Nordstrand - my island on the mainland". This is because the actual island has been connected to the mainland since 1934. The peninsula is home to designated dog beaches. At the Fühlehörn, Holmer Siel, and Lüttmoorsiel beaches, there are designated sections for dogs, where four-legged friends must be kept on a leash.

Dog beach at Holmer Siel

The Holmer Siel dog beach is spacious and ideal for relaxation. Dogs must be kept on a leash at this dog beach. Due to the fencing, some believe that the four-legged guest can run unleashed, however, the fencing is intended for the dike sheep. The dog beach at Holmer Siel is primarily a green beach, complemented by sand zones. The coarse sand is interspersed with shell limestone and stones, and algae line the sand. Overall, it could be cleaner here. The Holmer Siel dog beach is a destination for walks, but it is not a wide dog beach in the traditional sense. Dispensers for waste bags are available at the entrance. To the left of the dog beach begins the nudist beach, to the right are the textile bathers.

The green beach with a dog meadow of approx. 1000 sqm is fenced, which is a plus for safety. Unfortunately, swimming is only possible via a narrow staircase, but there is a shower on the beach for dogs. The many stones make swimming not easy for dogs. One should know the tide calendar. The beach is supervised by the DLRG during the season. Affordable parking is available at the entrance to the dog beach. The beach chair rental, which can be paid for at the café, is also affordable. There is another parking facility there, sanitary facilities, and options for coffee and cake. So, parking and cafés are plentiful. Beach chairs can also be rented at any time and do not require prior reservation.

Dog Beach Fühlehörn

At the green beach in Fühlehörn, there is a dog beach that offers bathing fun for four-legged friends and a beautiful view of the Halligen for their owners. The Fühlehörn dog beach is a fenced "dog meadow". It's relaxed here, not overcrowded - understandable, who as a dog owner would want to go here anyway? One imagines something different under a dog beach, in reality, the Fühlehörn dog beach is a dog meadow, rather a fenced dike area - where dogs must also be leashed.

Rentable beach chairs are on the meadow, a small snack bar is behind the dike, showering facilities are available, as well as a free parking lot with clean, public toilets. From the dog park, there is an unobstructed view of the children's playground.

At the entrance to the dog beach, there is a bowl where dogs can drink. Here you will also find the outdoor shower, where dogs and owners can rinse off after a mudflat hike. The gently sloping access to the water is suitable for small dogs and less experienced swimmers. Dogs are only allowed to run freely in the dog exercise area in Trendermarschkoog between Grüner Weg and Trendermarschweg.

Helgoland Dog Beach

Helgoland is a North Sea island in Schleswig-Holstein. The subsidiary island has an area of 4.2 km². The small island has a dog beach on the North-East Beach. However, there are no restaurants or public toilets in the immediate vicinity. The nearest restaurant facilities are about 900 meters away (approx. 13 min. walk). On Helgoland, dogs must be kept on a leash, with a few exceptions: on the North-East Beach and the exercise areas in Mittelland Kringel and at the South Harbor. Dogs are generally forbidden on the South Beach and on the dune. The North Beach is scenically beautiful, with landscape enjoyment being paramount. As a natural beach, thick boulders line the sandy area. Swimming at the North Beach is forbidden, there are no lifeguards on the beach, and the current and undertow out to sea are extremely strong. Absolutely no swimming with dogs here!

Wangerooge Dog Beach

The island of Wangerooge is located in the Lower Saxon Wadden Sea and adjoins the East Frisian Islands. Nothing stands in the way of a dog holiday on Wangerooge. Dogs can, of course, be taken on the ferries. The shipping company and island railway Wangerooge charges the price of a child's ticket for this. The island of Wangerooge is car-free. Parking spaces for cars are available at the harbour and in front of the harbour entrance at the airfield.

A dog beach at the eastern end of the bathing and castle beach is available for dog owners and their four-legged companions. There are also beach chairs, which can be pre-ordered from home, and a dog shower on the lower beach promenade. It is indeed advisable to book beach chairs in advance. A dog shower can also be found at the dog beach. Instead of plastic dog waste bags, the island also offers dog waste bags made of cardboard. 25 bags cost €7.99. In addition to the cardboard dog waste bags, the island offers plenty of free dog waste bags at 14 dog waste bag dispenser locations.

Dogs must always be on a leash throughout Wangerooge from March 15th to October 31st. Outside of this period, your four-legged friend may romp around unleashed only in certain zones. The designated off-leash areas are on the island beach, for example, from the dune crossing Bootsweg to the dune crossing Café Neudeich (east of the dog beach) and from the surf beach to the dune crossing Saline (west of the dog beach).

The spacious dog beach is located at the eastern end of Wangerooge's bathing and castle beach, between the "Panorama" house and the dike crossing to Bootsweg. A waste bag dispenser is at the entrance. The dog shower can be found on the lower beach promenade. Beach chairs can also be rented at the dog beach. There are dog bowls for large and small dogs. A small number of trash cans are also available.

Spiekeroog Dog Beach

Spiekeroog is an East Frisian island in Lower Saxony and covers 18.25 km². The island offers extensive beaches. Generally, there is a leash requirement. On the island, there is a dog beach with an off-leash area. This is located on the North Beach. Unfortunately, it is a bit far from the tourist center. The path there is also difficult: deep, unpaved sand. It is difficult for older people and families with children to manage. To get to Spiekeroog dog beach, you have to walk quite a distance through the dunes. Better to take off your shoes and wear a hat in the blazing sun.

Arriving at the dog beach, you'll find a quiet, large, clean beach where dogs can romp around. Shallow, clean, idyllic.... No entry fee! Scenic location. Not too crowded. However, the section of the beach where dogs are allowed to run freely is a bit narrow. There are no sanitary facilities and the section is unguarded. Please also note that there are no public toilets, no showers, no dog water, and no food and drink stations nearby. It's a 20-minute walk to the main beach. For longer stays, it is advisable to bring provisions for yourself and your beloved pet. Beach chairs are available for rent at the dog beach. Zbetween the main beach and the dog beach, there is more than 600 meters of no man's land.

Langeoog Dog Beach

The East Frisian island of Langeoog is located in Lower Saxony. On the island, leashes are compulsory - the only exception is in winter in the town center. The island offers free dog waste disposal bags and two designated dog beach sections: in the west via Hunpad, Süderdünenring and Kirchpad, and in the east via Norderpad.

The fine sandy dog beach is clean and wide (approx. 30 meters), resulting in a longer walk to the water. Usually, all dogs are leashed here, which greatly diminishes the enjoyment of the beach. The dog beach offers a shallow entry into the North Sea, very nice for small dogs and for small children. Beach chairs are available for rent, and there is also a shower for people and dogs. There could be more waste bins.

East Langeoog Dog Beach

The fine sandy dog beach in this section is also clean and well-maintained. Usually, all dogs are leashed here, and this is also monitored. The dog beach offers a shallow entry into the North Sea, ideal for smaller dogs and for small children. Beach chairs are no longer available for rent, but there is a shower for people and dogs. There could be more waste bins. The dog beach is also a kite beach, with all the dangers that entails for four-legged friends. Kite beach Next supply option (food/drinks) at least 10 minutes walk away. Unfortunately, the dog beach is even further from the restrooms, so it's better to use a bicycle to get to the toilet. Dog owners have once again been relegated to the very furthest corner of the island. The sand walls, where you can clearly see the shell layers, are impressive.

Baltrum Dog Beach

The East Frisian island of Baltrum is also located in Lower Saxony. A designated dog beach is located in the eastern section D, far from the tourist centers. Bag dispenser boxes are also available. From March to November, leashes are compulsory. Guest dogs must pay a daily fee of €1.50. There are also several playgrounds where children can let off steam, as well as beach chair rentals for relaxation. The island of Baltrum is therefore also perfect for a family holiday on the North Sea.

The sand on the dog beach is fine and clean. Particularly beautiful in this place are the offshore sandbanks, which can be reached on foot at low tide. In general, the sandy beach slopes gently into the seawater. Beach chairs are available for rent on the sandy beach in the section for dog owners. Be sure to reserve beach chairs in advance in summer! Uschi's Beach Club directly nearby is... Top! Otherwise, toilets and showers and a small restaurant are a 10-minute walk away.

Norderney Dog Beach

The East Frisian island of Norderney is also located in the state of Lower Saxony and offers three designated dog beaches for four-legged friends. However, the crossing is not entirely free for dogs and costs between 12 - 18 EUR, including a return trip, depending on the season. Leash duty applies on Norderney from March 1st to October 31st. And to dispose of dog waste, Norderney provides "Schietbüdel" (waste bags). Dogs are generally not allowed on the dike, not even on a leash!

Westbadestrand Dog Beach

The Westbadestrand (A) is located near the town and not far from the harbor. The Weststrand dog beach is an ideal destination before or after a stroll through the town of Norderney. Located right around the corner, this small beach section, with its 500 meters, is worth a detour. With a length of about 500 meters, the Westbadestrand is considered the smallest bathing beach in Norderney. There is a section for dogs with a leash requirement, which should not correspond to the character of a dog beach. A dog run is located 10 minutes' walk away, right next to the shelter. The dog beach has a leash requirement, but the lawn area at the Westbadestrand has no leash requirement for four-legged friends; here, the four-legged friend has its own territory. On the meadow, the dog can romp around or take a walk to the nearby town.

Dog Beach Weiße Düne (White Dune)

Another dog beach is located at the Weiße Düne (eastern section). This location is approximately 5 km from the town, but it invites for relaxing recreation. Here at the dog beach Ostbad “Weiße Düne”, people and animals can enjoy the beach and dunes. Due to its decentralized location, it is not overcrowded here outside of the season. The dog beach “Weiße Düne” is by far the most beautiful beach section on Norderney. The beach is not only very popular with two-legged friends but also a great excursion spot for our dogs. Here there is white sandy beach for the dog and dunes as far as the eye can see for the two-legged visitors. Unfortunately, the bathing area is far away, and swimming is prohibited at the dog beach. The dog beach is located in the eastern section, seen from the beach access point. A playground for kids is also on site.

Juist Dog Beach

The 16.43 km² North Sea island of Juist in Lower Saxony is also one of the East Frisian islands in the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea. The island has a 17 km long beach with two designated dog beaches. Dogs on Juist must be leashed from March 1st to November 15th and from December 20th to January 15th of each year. Public bathing beaches are – from mid-April to the end of the first week of October – generally closed to dogs. Thus, leash requirements also apply to both beaches. Currently, dogs are only allowed to run freely in the disappointingly small, fenced dog exercise area. This fenced dog exercise area is located at the end of the dike in Ostdorf.

Juist West Dog Beach

The dog beach with leash requirement in the west is about 50 meters long and begins at the western end of the bathing beach. Access is at the beach access point near Domäne Loog. Domäne is probably the most beautiful excursion destination on Juist.

Juist East Dog Beach

Borkum Dog Beach

The 30.97 km² island of Borkum is the largest of all the East Frisian islands and offers three designated dog beaches. Not only the sea, but also the Wadden Sea and the dunes can be used by dogs in designated areas. Perfect for walks, hikes, and excursions with a dog.

Borkum is more dog-friendly than other North Sea islands. Dogs on Borkum are generally to be kept on a leash. This also applies to all public paths, the promenade, and cycle and hiking trails. Outside the breeding and nesting seasons (April 1st to July 15th), however, dogs are allowed to run freely on the designated areas of the beach. There is a dog beach in the north, south, and at the nudist beach. Outside the breeding season, dogs are allowed to run freely in the "Schwarzer Deich" (Black Dike) zone and from the nudist beach to the right towards Hooge Hörn. Access is not permitted at other bathing beaches or zones marked with the "ECARF" seal.

Anyone who likes to lie in the summer sun on the beach is allowed to take their dog to the DLRG-supervised bathing beaches. At the Nordbad (North Bath), Südbad (South Bath), and also at the nudist beach, there are areas where dogs are allowed for swimming. These areas are marked with unmistakable "dog beach signs". At each dog beach, the island provides dog bags in white boxes for the waste of four-legged friends. Hygiene is ensured. They are also available free of charge at the tourist office and next to the town hall.

Borkum Dog Beach in the North

In the north, in the area of the boardwalks (in front of the Nordbad toilets), you will find the dog beach on Borkum. The kite & sand yachting school "World of Wind" is located nearby. The Nordstrand is a wonderfully expansive beach, offering a relaxed atmosphere for dogs and humans. There is plenty of space for dogs to run around and play. Walks and frolicking in the shallow sand are wonderfully possible.

Here at Nordstrand, beach life combines with the bustling activity in Borkum's center. The long sandbank of the Borkum reef keeps the surf away, thus creating dog-friendly bathing opportunities, even for small dogs. Due to the many rabbits in the dunes, free running is by no means suitable for dogs with a hunting instinct.

The dog beach has mixed use with the FKK (nudist) beach. The beach section is located exactly between the youth beach and the FKK beach. Here there is a beach sauna, ideal for canine companions. Nothing is more wonderful than cooling off in the North Sea after a hot sauna session. There is also a children's playground, a volleyball net, and various beach chairs and tents scattered along the beach.

St. Peter Ording Dog Beach

The municipality of St. Peter-Ording is located in the Nordfriesland district. The North Sea coast at St. Peter-Ording stretches along 12 km of fine sand beach, which invites many leisure activities such as surfing and sailing. The municipality also has a lot to offer for four-legged family members. Dogs are welcome guests in St. Peter-Ording. St. Peter-Ording is probably the best travel destination for a dog holiday on the North Sea.

A note in advance:

The distances in St. Peter-Ording are enormous and should not be underestimated. For daily trips to the beach, owners and their four-legged friends will cover several kilometers. For old dogs, flat-nosed dogs in summer, and dogs with short legs, it is worth bringing a dog stroller. Without an all-terrain dog stroller, a dog holiday with senior dogs can be strenuous and not enjoyable for the pets. St. Peter-Ording is a destination for sporty guests/dogs. Labradors, Whippets, Poodles, and other water lovers and long-distance runners romp on the beach.

Four-legged friends are allowed in almost all restaurants, cafés, and shops in St. Peter-Ording. There are only a few exceptions! Forests and dikes, long walks - the place is an absolute holiday paradise for dogs. They can be on a leash almost everywhere. To cover the distances within the town between the four districts, the local bicycle rental offers cargo bikes. The bench can be folded down and offers dogs the best view during bike tours.

In St. Peter-Ording, there are two central dog beaches where life takes place. The two bathing areas are located in the districts of Bad and Ording. They are gigantic off-leash areas, directly on the fine beach - naturally with water access. We will introduce these beaches in detail shortly. In Böhl, Dorf/Süd, Ording and Ording Nord, there are further designated dog areas where dogs are welcome on a leash on the beach.

The dog-free zones are small, isolated islands in the beach area.

The St. Peter Ording dog beach, as the test winner, offers a wonderful spot on earth for both two- and four-legged friends.

At five dog beaches, especially in two huge exercise areas, dogs are allowed to roam freely on the beach in St. Peter-Ording. Here they can run, swim, jump into the North Sea waves, play with other dogs, and of course, relax. Drinking stations are available in some places. Drinking water for dogs can also be drawn from the showers, so definitely remember to bring a bowl. Dog waste bags are available free of charge at around 60 dog service stations and at the Tourist Information Center. In summer, the holiday paradise on the beach offers little shade, so on perfect summer days, it's worth bringing a parasol to provide shade for your dog.

Four-legged friends are also welcome in the Wadden Sea National Park, but dogs must be kept on a leash in the Wadden Sea. The same applies to the other beaches, in the dunes, on the dikes, and in the foreland.

 

Dog Beach Bad

The district of Bad is the tourist center of St. Peter-Ording. The dog beach in the Bad district is located in front of the Bad and Kurzentrum St. Peter-Ording. To get there, the path leads about a kilometer along the promenade and the Gosch, further along the beach bridge.

Past the Arche Noah on the left, you reach the exercise area.

Beach area E is available as a designated dog beach. What you see and find there is a dream for every dog and owner. Although secluded, it has everything a dog owner's heart desires. Off-leash and endless expanses.

The dog beach in the Bad section is very clean and offers enough beach chairs during the season, dog waste bags, and disposal facilities.

At the dog beach in Bad, dogs can swim all day, even at low tide. The North Sea only recedes by about 200 meters. In Bad, you can park for free next to the police station on Deichgrafenweg, or for a fee at the Nordsee Reha-Klinik (approx. 3 euros per hour, as of 2022). Parking is also available for a fee directly on the beach parking lot, the flood zone (6-8 euros per day). Important: occasionally, the beach parking lot is flooded by the North Sea. Alternatively, you can park at the foot of the dike, behind the dike.

Toilets and a foot-washing station can be found directly at the beach access.

Dog Beach Ording

The Ording dog beach in the north was rated the best dog beach on the North Sea in our test. Large, clean, and fine-sanded - with a huge exercise area. A "must" for every dog owner looking for a dog holiday on the North Sea. The Ording dog beach offers everything a dog's heart desires and makes the owner happy. Clean, gently sloping, huge exercise areas, and endless space for romping. Dog showers and water stations, infrastructure, toilets, and catering - everything is just perfect here.

The northern part of the Ording dog beach is a bit far away, it's a few meters from Bad to here. Nevertheless, it's worth it: plenty of exercise for all types of dogs, shallow water, and good visibility. It's also less crowded here than at the main dog beach. An experience! Parking is available at the Ording beach parking lot and at the paid Hungerhamm parking lot. The best place to park is here at the farmer's. The parking lot is also one euro cheaper than the parking lot at the beach parking lot in the flood zone in Bad.

Compared to the dog beach in Bad, the walk is significantly shorter. This is also why the dog beach in Ording Nord is our favorite, ideal for a short visit to the beach in between. The path leads over the dike, down the jetty, through the dunes - directly to the dog beach.

The Ording dog beach is the largest and most beautiful dog beach in the holiday region itself. Sand as far as the eye can see. Centrally located to the quieter town center of Ording, you'll find an extra beach area with off-leash access for dogs. Here, dogs can go into the water without a leash or relax in a rented beach chair (only during the season).

Lots of space to romp around and always a new playmate for your four-legged friend. For a small snack in between or a potty break, it's only a few meters away. Dog waste bags and trash cans are plentiful. The huge exercise area for furry friends gently slopes into the water. There is plenty of space to romp around even at low tide. Digging or romping with other furry friends – basically a must for all dog holidaymakers to visit with their loved ones. A dog holiday can be so beautiful...!

The dog beach section transitions towards Bad to the FKK zone. The beach is located near the "Silbermöwe" pile dwelling restaurant, where dogs are also allowed to run around off-leash and swim in the North Sea waves. The beach is something very special. Enormously large, flat, and with very fine sand. You can drive almost to the water's edge. A great place to offer four-legged friends unrestrained exercise and enjoy the endless expanse and tranquility.

The special feature of the dog beach is the beach chair platform.

Dog Beach Böhl

At dog beach section D in Böhl - near the Böhl lighthouse - there's sand, sea, dunes, salt marshes and mudflats - perfect North Sea feeling on the beach for owners and dogs alike. Small and large four-legged friends will feel at home here, as the Böhl beach area is flat and thus perfectly suited for dogs with short legs.

At low tide, the water disappears, and dogs have the opportunity to walk in the mudflats. A wonderful dog beach, but unfortunately, there is a leash requirement here. Due to the vastness, dogs can also avoid each other a little! Especially recommended in the off-season, then you really have a lot of space. Parking is available at the parking lot on the dike and at Böhler Strand.

Occasionally, there are dog-free islands here as well, where dogs are not allowed.

Dog Beach Dorf

The rather narrow sandy beach is more suitable for older dogs. Here, your four-legged friend can make himself comfortable in a beach chair and dig a little in the sand. A visit to the "Strandhütte" with local specialties is worthwhile.

Dog Exercise Area Ording Nord

A 16-hectare dog exercise area is located in Ording-Nord, in the Hungerhamm area. If you park at the stand in Ording and walk towards the Westerhever lighthouse, you will automatically reach it! Alternatively, you can park directly in the parking lot at Norddeich; from the parking lot, a small path leads through the dunes for three minutes until you reach the exercise area!

Dog exercise area in Bad

Between the districts of Dorf and Bad, in the Westmarken area, you will find another dog exercise zone. Here, dogs can romp on 3,000 square meters of fenced-in space.

The area is covered with grass and is wonderful for racing other dogs.

At the dog beach in Bad and on the adjacent dog exercise area, dogs definitely have enough space to let off steam. The dog exercise area in Bad spans about 23 hectares and is located south of the pier, which leads from the groyne towards Arche Noah. If you go down the stairs in the middle of the pier and then walk south for fifteen minutes, you will see the first signs for the dog exercise area.

Tönning Dog Beach

Tönning is a town in the Nordfriesland district of the state of Schleswig-Holstein. The "dog beach" is a small section on the dike and is more like a "dog meadow." Calling it a dog beach is a massive exaggeration and misleading description. The dog exercise area consists of a large grassy area where you can romp around with your dog to your heart's content and constantly experience nice encounters with other dogs. A meadow, down the dike, for running, although you should always keep an eye on the adjacent bike path.

The dog beach is clean, and for those who don't care about sand and prefer to avoid water contact, the dog exercise area could be suitable. Dogs are allowed to run freely here, but the area is not fenced. On both sides, dogs must be kept on a leash. The signage at the dog beach is confusing: where does the dog beach begin (there is no beach here) and what all counts as a sunbathing lawn? Dogs are not allowed here at all...

Wesselburenerkoog Dog Beach

The municipality of Wesselburenerkoog is located in the Dithmarschen district of Schleswig-Holstein. In Wesselburenerkoog, there is a dog bathing beach where dogs must be kept on a leash. The Wesselburenerkoog dog beach is a very small section amidst beach access points, with hardly any shady spots to linger. The dog beach is not fenced. All dogs must be leashed, as the area is in the middle of a nature reserve that may not be entered. There is no beach in the classic sense; access to the water is reinforced with large stones. Unfortunately, the dog beach therefore offers no access to the water, as dogs can hardly "climb" over the stones. Access to the mudflats is in the beach section forbidden for dogs. Not much is happening at this somewhat secluded dog beach. A bistro with toilets is located directly at the parking lot.

Büsum Dog Beach

The municipality of Büsum belongs to the Dithmarschen district and is located in Schleswig-Holstein. The port town on the North Sea has an area of 8.48 km². In the municipal park at Rechenmeisterweg, there is a 3,000 sqm dog exercise area. Your dog is only allowed to run free and make new friends here.

The municipality also offers mudflat walks with national park mudflat guides, and your four-legged friend can even participate on a leash. A special mudflat tour for dog lovers lasts approximately 2 hours and brings joy to both dog and dog owner. Büsum offers free dispensers with dog waste bags.

And both in the south and in the north of Büsum, there are two dog beaches to choose from. First off, anyone who has a dog should avoid Büsum; it will not please owners and their furry friends. Büsum is at the bottom of our test as the most dog-unfriendly travel destination on the North Sea. The dog beach test gives Büsum the worst marks. Dog-unfriendly, a meager offering, and poor infrastructure await vacationers with dogs in Büsum.

Büsum Dog Beach Perlebucht

The northern Büsum dog beach is located at the Perlebucht family lagoon. At this dog beach section in the lagoon, four-legged friends are allowed to go into the water and splash around on a leash. However, the beach is unkempt, and many sharp-edged shells can injure dogs' paws, so be careful. Dogs won't find much joy at this dog beach. A narrow staircase leads to the water, where visitors often stand. Due to the leash requirement, dogs have no opportunity to romp around with each other. At low tide, it's somewhat fun for dogs in the mudflats, preferably with a long line. There's not much good to report about the Perlebucht dog beach, only the shower with a hose to clean the dog is useful. Unfortunately, dogs are only allowed to walk on the dike; the family lagoon is not permitted.

For guests, it's either a vacation with children or a vacation with a dog; both do not work in Büsum.

Büsum South Beach Dog Beach

In the south, at Büsum's South Beach, owners can also bring their pets, but dogs are not allowed in the water or the mudflats here. The dog beach consists of a small grassy area where dogs can walk on a leash. Dogs are only allowed on a very short leash at the dog beach. In addition, many guests complain about the unfriendly behavior of local staff. If guests venture from the dog beach towards the "normal beach," they are repeatedly lectured about all the things dogs are not allowed to do. And this is sometimes quite unfriendly. There is no shortage of enforcement officers, only of courtesy towards holiday guests. Büsum is not recommended with a dog, even at the South Beach!

Nordermeldorf Dog Beach

The municipality of Nordermeldorf in Schleswig-Holstein hosts two designated dog beaches. A vacation with a dog actually means pure North Sea vacation! Dike walks, treasure hunting during mudflat hiking, and swimming in the sea: this is how wonderful a holiday with a dog could be. Overall, in Nordermeldorf, the poor impression of Büsum for dog vacations geographically continues.

Dog Beach 1 at the lido in Nordermeldorf

Dog beach 1 at the lido in Nordermeldorf is a dog dike where dogs are tolerated. Dogs must be kept on a very short leash. Entry into the water is difficult. There is no sandy beach; the meadow is paved with sheep droppings. Here in Nordermeldorf, there are mudflat tours for dog lovers and their four-legged companions. Directly behind the dike is a kiosk, public toilets, the Wattenmeer National Park information stand, and a little inland behind the parking lot, an adventure playground and a football field for children. On the dike, guests with dogs can rent beach chairs.

Friedrichskoog Dog Beach 

The municipality of Friedrichskoog is located south of the Dithmarschen district and has an area of 53.35 km². Four-legged friends are allowed on a leash both on the beach and in the Wadden Sea National Park. And access is only via the designated path, never over the dike (strictly forbidden!). In the 400-meter long green dog beach on Strandweg, dogs are also allowed to swim. A beautiful green beach. Definitely not comparable to a sandy beach. Beach shells for sun and wind protection are only allowed to be set up without pegs. The pedestrian path shows where you have to walk. There is a dog shower on Strandweg. On Nordseestraße (behind the motorhome parking area), there is a dog exercise area where furry friends can let off steam.

Delicious treats for your dog can be found at "Fressbolles" or the DOG-FOOD station in Kaiser-Wilhelm-Koog, and beach chairs are available from €7.00. Dog waste bag dispensers are also available. And the nearest parking facility is only 500 m away. Don't forget to rent a beach chair in time to relax and pack your wellington boots.

Cuxhaven Dog Beach

The district capital Cuxhaven is located in the district of Cuxhaven in Lower Saxony. The third-largest city on the North Sea coast has three designated dog beaches, with the main dog beach located in the Sahlenburg district.

Grimmershörn Dog Beach

Grimmershörn Beach stretches from the Kugelbake almost to the "Alte Liebe." A green dog beach is located directly near the stunt kite flying area and extends to the ferry port/Grimmershörn. Ergo, there are two green beach sections for your four-legged friend here. They can enjoy a beach day at the Kurpark entrance and near the ferry port. While your dog stretches all fours or plays with a ball, you can watch the many ships passing by.

You can perfectly combine your eventful day at the green beach with a stroll through the city. The main shopping street (Nordersteinstraße) is directly nearby. A walk with your dog to the "Alte Liebe" is also an excellent idea. From the pier, you can watch the ships departing for the islands of Neuwerk and Helgoland, as well as to the seal banks.

Cuxhaven Sahlenburg Dog Beach

The Sahlenburg dog beach in Cuxhaven, despite its relatively small width of about 400 meters, is one of our favorites for holidays with dogs on the North Sea. It is a sandy beach with access to the mudflats. During peak season, it can quickly get crowded due to the narrow width of the dog beach.

At Sahlenburg dog beach itself, everything is provided: diverse gastronomy & light refreshments for any time of day, play opportunities for dogs, healthy mudflats for mudflat hiking, and many opportunities for all vacationers. For four-legged friends, there are ample dog showers with drinking water quality and seating for the owner. Access to the dog beach requires a visitor's card. The sandy dog beach is located near the Wernerwald campsite. In Wernerwald itself, dog owners and dogs have a wide range of long walks to choose from.

Left of the entrance to the dog beach are the drinking water stations and dog waste bag dispensers. Here you can also rent beach chairs for the dog beach. Leash requirements are not regularly enforced outside of the main season. Outside of the main season (May 1st - October 31st) and the Easter season (variable, please inquire with the tourist office), dogs are allowed on all promenades, sand and green beaches, as well as the Grimmershörn Bay. Of course, dogs must still be kept on a leash.

The Wadden Sea itself is vast, healthy, and not muddy. Walks with a dog on a long leash are possible for long distances, for hours without problems. A play paradise for every dog.

Dog beach Dornum

The municipality of Dorum is located in East Frisia in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony. The village of Dorum-Neßmersiel in Lower Saxony offers a sandy and green beach of approx. 5,000m². The dog beach Dorum-Neufeld is located to the left of the lighthouse. The beach is divided into "human beach", dog beach with dogs on a leash, and dog beach off-leash. This is a beach section with green grass. Please note that fees are charged for entry to the dog beach for both owners and dogs. Prices vary and are approximately between €7-8 per person and approx. €3 per dog. Toilets are within walking distance. Paid parking is available directly at the beach. Beach chairs can be rented. At low tide, dogs can also use the Wadden Sea on a long leash to run.

Here too, there is a leash requirement and dog showers are also available. However, if your four-legged friend also likes to let off steam and romp around with like-minded individuals, there is a 2500m² off-leash area at the end of the dog beach. If the four-legged family member needs more to be let loose, there is also a dog playground with an obstacle course.

Dog Beach Butjadingen

The municipality of Butjadingen in Lower Saxony offers dog owners 2 beach sections. Dogs are allowed on a leash in both Burhave and Tossens. Both dog sections are fenced dog beaches. Dogs will prefer the two off-leash areas in Burhave and Eckwarderhörne. They can run free there without a leash. Overall, the Butjadingen dog beaches are not particularly recommended for holidays with dogs.

Dog Beach & Off-leash Area Burhave

Clean, central, and yet quietly located - that's what characterizes the dog beach in Burhave. The section in Burhave is a dike meadow directly on the beach and offers dogs a 4900 sqm area. Enough space for the dog to move around, even if it weren't on a leash. A construction fence encloses the area. Leash requirements also apply in the Wadden Sea. Food is available; the Rondell beach café offers savory and sweet dishes.

If the dog beach is not enough for romping, a visit to the off-leash area Burhave next to the Spielscheune in Burhave is worthwhile. It can be reached on foot from the dog beach in a few minutes. Dogs are allowed to run free on the fenced area. Tunnels, tree trunks, sand, and other play equipment are set up. There is even a small pond for water dogs to cool off in. It is a very nicely designed and well-maintained dog meadow with various play options to allow dogs some off-leash freedom, given the otherwise severely restricted possibilities for free running. Waste bags and enough garbage cans are also available.

Dog Beach Tossens

The dike section in Tossens covers an area of approximately 1500 sqm. The dog beach in Tossens is more like a small meadow. If it's high tide, there's hardly any sand to walk on. Nevertheless, the dog beach offers many things that owners with dogs appreciate for beautiful hours by the sea. The dog can relax in a rentable beach chair or take an exciting walk in the Wadden Sea - on a leash, of course. Access to the water is over rough stones, partly covered with bitumen. You lie directly on the paved, green dike with a northwest orientation and can let your gaze wander over the Wadden Sea or the water. There are dog showers and for the owner, toilets and a changing cabin in the shape of a lighthouse. Nice! Less attractive is the construction fence and the numerous prohibition signs that make the area appear, the term "dog kennel of Tossens" comes to mind.

Dog Beaches in Wangerland

The municipality of Wangerland is located in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony. It is the largest municipality in the district of Friesland and provides several designated dog beaches. In Wangerland on the North Sea, there are several opportunities for discovery with a dog. Wangerland offers good conditions for holidays with dogs. There are several dog beaches with leash requirements, dog showers, dog parks, and dog-friendly restaurants and leisure activities.

Special areas for dogs on the beach are designated in the bathing resorts of Hooksiel and Horumersiel-Schillig. Here, four-legged friends can move in the sand and in the waves of the sea on a leash. That's right, in Wangerland on the North Sea, dogs are required to be on a leash even on the dog beach. Dogs are welcome in natural, unkempt beach sections away from the tourist centers; the beach resorts are operated dog-free. In other words, holidaymakers with dogs are relegated to the peripheral areas of the beaches that are barely maintained.

Dog Beach Hooksiel

The dog beach in Hooksiel is located in one of the tourist strongholds for a holiday on the North Sea.
After a few minutes' walk and a disproportionately high fee for beach access with a dog - past the beach section for holidaymakers at the lido, the dog beach adjoins in a decentralized manner.

The municipality charges high fees of €4-6 per dog and person for admission to the partially maintained dog beach Hooksiel Wangerland. This is poorly proportionate to what is offered there.

Both the lido and the FKK zone have designated beach sections for dogs. Beach chairs can be rented, and sanitary facilities are available at the beach section for holidaymakers without dogs. Everything else is provided: for children, there is a large playground, a bungee trampoline, a Ferris wheel, snack bar, clean toilets, indoor and outdoor showers. Only dogs are shortchanged.

In the Wadden Sea, as on the beach, there is a strict leash requirement, which is thoroughly enforced. On the positive side, extra dog showers allow the mud to be washed off after a walk in the Wadden Sea. Dogs are then allowed to run free in a fenced grassy area, whether you have to drive to the dog beach, which is also expensive, is an important question before planning your holiday destination. A dog beach with such a strict leash requirement is about as useful as a children's playground where you have to constantly hold your children's hands.

The dog beach in Hooksiel is partially maintained in the off-season and is separated from the green dog beach by the North Sea dunes. A pleasant change between asphalt, green sections, dunes, Wadden Sea, and sandy beach is nice. For a dog holiday on the North Sea, the Hooksiel dog beach is of a pleasant size. After all, you are not on the Baltic Sea here!

The Wadden Sea in front of the dog beach is relatively intact and can be used for walks on a leash. Dog water lovers will find this great. Here and there a tidal creek crosses, inviting water dogs for a mud bath.

Dog beach Horumersiel-Schillig

The dog beach in Schillig near Horumersiel is one of the largest dog beaches in East Frisia. Its vastness is beautiful and a little surprising. A beach walk with a dog is possible here even for a greater distance. The wide sandy beach in Schillig offers a nice spot for four-legged friends outside the designated lido. Here, guests can walk their dogs on a leash on the natural beach after a long walk.

The dog beach Schillig offers sand for paws and there is also a dog shower. Even the access from the dike - through the dunes - to the beach brings joy to four-legged friends. The leash requirement is strictly controlled.

Even in the off-season, the dog beach is adequately maintained, cleared, and garbage cans are emptied. It is clean here at Schillig dog beach. The condition of the Wadden Sea is unsightly and has not improved in the last 30 years. The Wadden Sea at this point is not healthy and is muddy. The condition is so bad that a Wadden Sea walk with a dog in Schillig is hardly possible. In contrast to other dog beaches on the North Sea, holidaymakers here are exclusively bound to the beach.

Dog Beach Carolinensiel

The district town of Wittmund is located in the northwest of Lower Saxony. The district of Carolinensiel offers dog lovers a tiny, designated dog beach. The dog beach section is less than 100 meters long. The dog beach Carolinensiel / Harlesiel is thus one of the smallest dog beaches in Wangerland.

Dog owners have to pay a disproportionately high fee for entry. The dog beach appears unkempt and is surprisingly small, even with low expectations. A beach walk with a dog is not possible here. A little sand, asphalt, and grass belong to the small beach section for four-legged friends, which is a tapering area with the harbor dam at its back.

There are dog showers - which are necessary after a walk in the muddy Wadden Sea. The cleaning station consists of 2 showers and 4 faucets, without a hose for spraying down the dogs.

In the Carolinensiel-Harlesiel dog beach, there is a leash requirement. Compliance with the leash requirement is strictly controlled. A walk with a leashed dog at the waterline is not permitted outside the 100 meters at the dog beach. Not a nice place to spend your holiday with a dog.

The town of Norden is located in East Frisia, Saxony. In the Norddeich district, there is a designated dog beach that is currently being renovated. Dogs can romp around unleashed on the approximately 2-hectare dog beach. The temporary replacement dog beach, as last year, is divided into two different areas:

•    Dog Sand Beach (leash required, 3,200 square meters)
•    Dog Green Beach (off-leash, 7,000 square meters)

 Both beaches are fenced and connected by a door. A short distance from the temporary dog beach, there is a staircase system at the Drachenwiese (Dragon Meadow) to access the Wadden Sea. Leash use is mandatory year-round here.

In the so-called recreation zone - Zone III - dogs can run unleashed. An exception applies from April 1st to July 15th, during which dogs must be leashed in Zone III as well. This area is located to the west of the sand beach, next to the currently closed dog beach. Due to ongoing renovation work, the area has limited usability. Beach chairs, a dog shower, and drinking facilities for animals are not currently available there, only at the temporary dog beach. The dog beach is expected to be relocated back to the western part of the beach in early summer 2022, where dogs will be allowed to run unleashed on the fenced sand beach.

For a carefree day at the beach, the following amenities are expected to be available from mid-April 2022:

•    Beach chairs, including special ones for dogs!

One thing we can tell you right away – dog beaches in Holland are an absolute dream! The Netherlands is a very dog-friendly country, which is particularly noticeable on the coast during a holiday in Holland by the sea, as there are a multitude of beautiful dog beaches here. And accommodations, restaurants, and beach pavilions are usually already prepared for the visit of four-legged friends.

Dog Beach Scheveningen

Scheveningen is the largest and best-known resort on the Dutch North Sea coast, with a modern appearance. Scheveningen is "lively" during the season and offers a lot of variety for a dog holiday. Dogs are welcome here 365 days a year. Away from all the idyll, you can party, drink, dance, and enjoy summer nights with good food. Dogs can play for miles on the beach without a leash. The first-class beach bars line the beach and run for miles parallel to the promenade. You can buy everything a dog's heart desires here. The dog beach in Scheveningen is certainly the most beautiful dog beach we have tested internationally.

There are 2 dog beaches in Scheveningen:

• The North Beach starts at the end of the hotel row (behind the Carlton Beach Hotel), at the end of the Zwarte Pad parking lot, and extends to Wassenaar. The dog beach is a huge stretch of beach; from Zwarte Pad to Wassenaar, it takes about 45 minutes to walk with an athletic dog.
• On the South Beach (beach access 9) is the smaller dog beach, which extends to beach access 10. If you come by car, you can park on Kwartellaan or Fuutlaan in the Vogelwijk. Then it's a few minutes' walk through the dunes to the dog beach.

North Beach

The dog beach at beach access Noorderstrand 34 towards Katwijk is an ideal playground for dogs all year round. Here, they can run around off-leash to their heart's content and chase the waves. The spacious beach section invites long walks. The car can best be parked at the Zwarte Pad parking lot.

 

South Beach

The dog beach south of Scheveningen is located between beach access 9 and beach access 10. Many Hague residents come to these and neighboring beaches with their children. Limited parking is available on Fuutlaan and Laan van Poot on the dune side. From there, it's about a 10-15 minute walk. Near beach access 10, there are also individual parking options, mainly on Duivelandsestraat or Nieboerweg. The southern beach is generally quieter than the bustling North Beach.

Scheveningen is an insider tip for handicapped dogs. Access to the dog beach with a dog stroller is easily possible due to the well-maintained beach paths. It is also possible to stroll along the miles of promenade barrier-free with a dog stroller.

Dog Beaches Belgium 

Dog Beach Ostend

Ostend is a modern coastal city with a big-city flair. At the eastern end of the long promenade is the small beach, which is designated as a dog beach with a leash requirement year-round. The leash requirement is also adhered to here. The beach along a harbor bay is about 500 meters wide and 80 meters deep. In contrast to the main beach, it could be cleaner here. The mudflats are silty, the water smells stagnant, and the beach is lined with algae.

Both beaches – the main beach and the dog beach – are separated by a narrow path. A short distance from the dog beach is a charming, clean, and spacious sandy beach, which, unfortunately, is not accessible to dog owners during the day in season. From July to August, dogs on a leash are only allowed on the main beach between 8:00 PM and 8:00 AM. During the off-season, these times are extended. In April, May, June, and September, dogs are not allowed on the main beach between 10:00 AM and 6:30 PM. In winter – between October 1st and March 31st – dogs are welcome on the beach around the clock.

For a beach holiday in Ostend with a dog, visitors will find none of the following amenities. Therefore, it is best to be prepared for a day at the beach.

Good to Know - Dog Parks in Ostend:

Ostend has many specially designed dog parks and off-leash areas. These are located:

• • At the Blauw Kruis animal shelter in Maria Hendrikapark.
  • On Leffingestraat, behind the tennis club.
  • In the Raversyde Provincial Domain.
  • In the urban forest.
  • Along Schietbaanstraat.
  • Along Ankerstraat; Along Lijndraaiersstraat.
  • In the sports park at the end of Sportparklaan and the strip of pasture along Schorrestraat, Schorredijk, and Steensedijk.
  • Along Brigade Pironlaan.

Travel Tips

At many dog beaches on the North Sea, beach chairs are also rented out, and at some, you can benefit from early bird discounts. At almost all dog beaches, the community provides free dog waste bags. These so-called dog waste bag dispensers are particularly abundant at dog beaches. So please also think of your fellow human beings and always dispose of your four-legged friend's droppings. Dog waste bags are available at most dog beaches, but if there's no dispenser nearby, it's better to be prepared.

Since it's saltwater on the North Sea, some dog beaches offer small dog showers. However, this is not always the case, so don't forget to rinse your dog with fresh water at the latest when you return to the hotel. You should always carry a food and water bowl with you, even if there are water stations at some dog beaches, it's better to be safe than sorry.

Due to wind and weather conditions, conjunctivitis can also occur, and to take preventive measures, visit your vet or pharmacist before your trip to get eye drops. You should also take flea and tick remedies and tick tweezers for emergencies. Always adhere to the rules of the respective local communities, as high fines can be imposed. Since dogs are allowed off-leash in some places, our tip would be to attach a name tag to your dog's collar or harness - in case they get lost.
